As mentioned
before, Cherot’s ‘G’ follows a
slightly altered narrative and I feel that it is crucial to outline it before
beginning my analysis. One of the major differences between this remake and the
other two is that it is set in the time that it was made which was 2002; also
the entire cast (excluding 2 minor characters) is African American. The story
begins when Tre (Nick Carraway), goes to the Hamptons to visit his cousin Sky
(Daisy Buchanan) and her wealthy husband Chip Hightower (Tom Buchanan). Tre is
a writer for a prominent hip-hop magazine run by Chip’s father; his purpose for
coming to the Hamptons is to interview a successful producer named Summer G
(Jay Gatsby). Tre is disillusioned with
Chip after he discovers his affair with Ladara (Myrtle Wilson), and does not
hesitate to bring Sky and Summer together to rekindle their relationship from
10 years ago. Throughout the film there are characters such as one hit wonder
rapper Craig and his girlfriend Nicole struggling to succeed in life and in the
hip hop industry. Craig soon realises that Nicole is cheating on him with
someone more financially stable and this causes him to attempt to shoot her,
but Sky gets caught in the crossfire and is tragically murdered. This is
another main difference in narrative, the fact that ‘Gatsby’ survives and ‘Daisy’
dies.
